Summary[]

Morocco (Arabic: المغرب‎ "al-Maghrib"), officially the Kingdom of Morocco (Arabic: المملكة المغربية‎), is a country located in North Africa with a population of 33,757,175. It has a coast on the Atlantic Ocean that reaches past the Strait of Gibraltar into the Mediterranean Sea. Morocco has international borders with Algeria to the east, Spain to the north (a water border through the Strait and land borders with two small Spanish autonomous cities, Ceuta and Melilla), and Mauritania to the south via its Western Saharan territories.

Morocco is the only country in Africa that is not currently a member of the African Union. However, it is a member of the Arab League, Arab Maghreb Union, Francophonie, Organization of the Islamic Conference, Mediterranean Dialogue group, and Group of 77. It is also a major non-NATO ally of the United States.

Brief History[]

What is now Morocco was first unified by the Saadis in 1554 after conquering it from various local rulers, and where replaced by Alaouites in 1666. Despite falling under the a joint protectorate of France and Spain in 1906, the Dynasty clung onto power and resumed autocratic rule of the country in 1956. Initially, the king was seen as a unifying nationalist figure, however, the growing conflict over the integration of Spanish administered territories and the growing political and social repression in the name of anti-communism starting with the ascension of Hassan II to the throne in 1961 lead to increasing dissent. Despite adopting a constitution in 1963 that nominally affirmed a multi-party political system, the King retained significant power, and triggered more pro-democracy activity, resulting in a thirty odd year government back lash known as the "years of lead". In addition to the internal dissent, Morocco experienced a deterioration in relations with Algeria, ,culminating in the short lived "sand war", that has never really improved. With King Hassan's death in 1999, Morocco's throne passed to his far more liberal son Mohammad VI, who launched the Equity and Reconciliation Commission (IER) to investigate abuses committed in the name of the state. He also started several other reforms to make Morocco freer and more democratic. The King, however, retains significant executive power.
