Modern HistoryEdit

In the early 1920s, Mongolia's government was overthrown by a communist coup. The Khan, however, was left in place and in the 1923 constitution was labelled the leader of the Mongolian People. While he has little legislative power, the Khan has considerable influence over the military and is the commander in chief.

Between the wars, Mongolia developed painfully slowly, however, in 1945 the new Khan, Borda saw his chance and invaded Chinese Mongolia which had been occupied by the Japanese. This addition of territory, endorsed by the USSR, tripled Mongolia's population and added several small cities from which it could begin to build an industrial base.

Mongolia then began to develop steadily and during the Sino-Soviet split the government decided upon a policy of Communuetrality, in other words, they would not take sides with either the Chinese of the Soviets. With both sides wanting to win over Mongolia, investment from China and the USSR in the country increased and its economy grew quickly for several years. However when Communeutrality was engrained in the constitution investment began to dwindle.

All was not lost for the Mongolians, however, and since then they have made a thriving business by buying Chinese goods and selling them to the Soviets and vice versa, as importations directly from each other was discouraged by the Chinese and Soviet governments.

Some Mongolians still live close to, or below the poverty line, however, most are much better off then their Chinese neighbours.

Economy of MongoliaEdit

The majority of Mongolians continue to work in agriculture, largely in cattle based nomadic activities. In recent years Mongolia has begun developing an industrial base and has also been making a significant profit from being a middleman for Soviet and Chinese goods. All these factors have allowed for a steadily growing economy.

Military of MongoliaEdit

The Mongolian Military comprises of two branches, the Mongolian Peoples Air Force and the Mongolian Peoples Army both under the supreme command of the Khan.

The Mongolian Peoples Army follows roughly the same rank system of the Soviet Army and uses much of their equipment. It comprises of two main wings, a relatively large armoured force of tanks and infantry fighting vehicles, and a smaller force of infantry, mostly conscripts. With infrastructure low and a large area to defend, it is important that the Mongolians maintain a significant force of transport units.

The Mongolian Peoples Air Force is small consisting of some low range Soviet Aircraft.
